Dollar soars as market hits late dip

The value of U.S. Treasuries rose nearly half a percent Thursday to trade at $1,200.62, a new all-time high on optimism about further improvement in the global economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 6.5 points, or 2.1 percent, to end at 21,000. The 10-year note hit its highest level since March 4, 2013 and climbed a record 8.1 percent to 2,927.50 at 9:05 a.m. Thursday on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

As of noon, the Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 had traded above their 52-week highs.

The Nasdaq also registered its all-time high of 2,064.82, with 1,069.15. Shares of Bank of America Corp. were off by 1 percent in closing trading, while Goldman Sachs Group Inc. added 0.1 percent.

The price of oil fell again, to $45.12 a barrel, after dropping back after reaching a 12-year low of $49.63. Oil rose on the expectation that Saudi Arabia will lift economic restrictions ahead of Wednesday's OPEC meeting in Vienna to press for production cuts, which Saudi Arabia says would save the world's biggest oil exporter $300 billion a year. OPEC's member nations meet to determine next month's output targets.
